Here are the most common reasons:

-Too much downward pressure – These tampers are designed to bounce. If too much weight is applied, the internal piston cannot complete its stroke and the tool will stall.

-Hydraulic flow issue – Low oil flow, blocked couplers, or kinked hoses can cause the tamper to run but stop under load.

-Worn internal seals – If internal seals are worn, the tamper may run in the air but stop when it contacts the ground.

-Binding or debris – Dirt buildup, a bent rod, or binding in the tamper shoe can prevent proper movement when pressure is applied.

Tip: The tamper should be guided with light pressure and allowed to bounce on its own rather than forced into the ground.
